In 1969, Democrat Senator Gaylord Nelson of the United States held speeches at U.S. universities and planned to organize a campus campaign against the Vietnam War on April 22 of the following year. However, at the 1969 preparatory meeting in Seattle, activities were held. One of the organizers, Dennis Hayes, a student at Harvard Law School, proposed the grassroots movement, which is based on the theme of environmental protection.
April 22, 1970 was selected as the first "Earth Day." On April 22 of that year, about 20 million people across the United States took part in demonstrations and speeches.

Earth Day
The United States' 1970 was an eventful event. Optical fiber fabrics were invented. The tragedy of "Apollo 13" led to the failure of the moon landing program. A leak occurred at a nuclear plant near the Savannah River in South Carolina. , breathing the lead exhaust of a luxury car all day long. The factory emits smoke and sewage indiscriminately but never fears that it will be prosecuted or condemned by public opinion. "Environmentalists" are rare and they are only words listed in the dictionary, but they are rarely valued. It is against this background that the first "Earth Day" has achieved great success. In view of the public’s concern for environmental protection, the US Congress adjourned on “Earth Day” and nearly 40 members of the House of Representatives addressed the local assembly. The American celebrities such as Lund Dubes, Paul Ehrlich and Ralph Nader gave speeches to clarify the significance of the rally. 250,000 people gathered in Washington, DC and 100,000 people marched to Fifth Avenue in New York City to support the event.
According to statistics, more than 20 million people, 10,000 primary and secondary schools, 2,000 colleges and universities, and 2,000 communities and large groups throughout the United States participated in the "Earth Day" event. People held rallies, parades, and other forms of propaganda activities. They held up contaminated earth models, giant paintings, and diagrams. They shouted slogans and demanded that the government take measures to protect the environment. The first "Earth Day" activity in 1970 was a grand event and was hailed as the largest social event in the United States since World War II. The event marked the rise of the United States environmental protection movement and prompted the U.S. government to take some measures to deal with environmental pollution.
